SERVICES AND CURRICULUM

Curriculum

I use an emergent curriculum approach that is play based and child centered. This means I do not use a boxed curriculum or pre-determined units. Instead I observe and assess each student regularly to determine their interests, abilities, and needs. Themes and big ideas are chosen and planned for based on the above. I take particular care to make sure each student is challenged at their level to communicate, collaborate, think critically, and solve problems big and small.

My teaching practices are constructivist and heavily influenced by loose parts theory, Montessori, Reggio, and Waldorf philosophies as well as some project work. Because I am familiar with many teaching philosophies, pedagogical methods, curricular models and approaches, I am able to prepare my spaces and materials to serve the unique needs of each individual student in: literacy, math, science, social studies, as well as creative arts in a child centered and play based manner. I believe whole heartedly in the value of unstructured outdoor play for children's social/emotional and cognitive development as well as mental health. As such we spend as much time outdoors daily as possible rain or shine.

I use Head Start’s Interactive Early Learning Outcomes Framework: Ages Birth to Five to guide my practice in five central developmental domains: Approaches to Learning, Social and Emotional Development, Language and Communication, Literacy, Mathematics Development, Scientific Reasoning, and Perceptual, Motor, and Physical Development.
